How much RAM does Docker need?
Docker states the memory Docker Desktop itself needs, on each platform. The containers you run come on top, and no vendor publishes a figure for those.
What the vendors say
- Docker Desktop (macOS): min 4 GB, recommended not stated. Docker

At least 4 GB of RAM.
- Docker Desktop (WSL 2 backend) (Windows): min 8 GB, recommended not stated. Docker

8GB system RAM
- Docker Desktop (Linux): min 4 GB, recommended not stated. Docker

- Rancher Desktop (macOS, Windows, Linux): min not stated, recommended 8 GB. SUSE

It is also recommended to have: 8 GB of memory 4 CPU
- minikube (macOS, Windows, Linux): min 2 GB, recommended not stated. Kubernetes project

2 CPUs or more 2GB of free memory
What it does with memory
Docker Desktop runs containers inside a virtual machine, and that memory comes out of the rest of your system. Local Kubernetes tools add a cluster on top.
Signs it is short
- 1
Containers stop without warning
- 2
Builds slow down once several services are up
- 3
Swap grows while the stack runs
The vendor figures are floors for the tool, not for your stack. The sum of your services is what counts. How to read memory pressure.
